Excelsiors
shock Laker faithful
Aug 17/07
I offer my humblest apologies to all the Excelsior
faithful who are used to more in depth reporting.
Game one of the MSL finals ended 3 hours ago and
although I am extremely awestruck by the performance
that I witnessed I will have to keep this brief
so that I begin getting ready for Game 2 in Brampton
this Sunday.
The Excelsiors
walked into the always hostile Memorial arena once
again to face the first place Peterborough Lakers
and over 2700 of their supporters. Just 21 seconds
into the game Mat Giles blasted a shot through a
screen and past netminder Anthony Cosmo. 7 minutes,
and one penalty kill later and captain Dan Teat
answered back on a delayed penalty. Mike Hominuck
beat Pat O’Toole half-way through the first period
to give the Excel’s the lead…and they never looked
back. Josh Sanderson and Jeff Shattler would both
add short-handed goals to spread the lead to 4-1
as the first period expired.
Although
the second period held just as much action, the
scoring did not come easy for either team. With
7 minutes to go Teat buried his second of the night,
and exactly one minute later Aaron Wilson tallied
his first. The second period came to close with
Brampton up 6-1.
3 minutes
into the third period Dan Carey was credited with
a goal that dribbled over the line after Cosmo made
the initial stop. That was the last goal that Peterborough
would claim on the night. The Excelsiors added two
powerplay goals (Wilson and Manning) on their way
to an 8-2 victory.
As Brampton
well knows, one victory means nothing in this heated
rivalry, but it is the best way to start a series.
It is my hope that the Excelsior faithful will show
their support in droves this coming Sunday at the
Powerade Centre, as we know that Peterborough will
not take losing game one lightly.
