Excelsior's continue
their winning ways
After winning the home opener 12-10
over the Six Nations Chiefs in front of a great crowd
at the Powerade Centre Thursday night the Brampton squad
looked forward to the next task at hand, the grueling
trip to battle the St. Regis Indians
With some key players still not back
yet, and already fighting the injury bug after game
1 it was a depleted, yet confident team that boarded
the bus at 10:30 Saturday morning for the 7:00 game
just outside of Cornwall. The team traveled with two
call-ups, one from the Senior B affiliate Ajax-Pickering
Rock, and one from the Burlington Chiefs Junior A team,
but that still left them 2 players short from a full
line-up. The team was not willing to accept any excuses
and was determined to fight hard for the 2 points on
the line that could make all the difference in the standings
down the road.
St. Regis's newest acquisition, NLL
MVP Athan Iannucci opened the scoring 5 minutes into
the game, but rookie sensation John McClure tied it
up 4 minutes later, keeping up his scoring streak going.
Dan Dawson came around the edge to give the Excelsiors
the lead 2 and a half minutes later, but Iannucci answered
that goal from the same spot he scored his first. Jeff
Shattler buried a cross crease from Dan Dawson with
15 seconds remaining to end the 1st period.
The Excelsior's never looked back. Jeff
Shattler scored his second of the night 6 minutes into
the second frame to give the team a two goal lead. Steve
Toll from St. Regis blocked a shot on an Excelsior power-play
and sped down the floor to bring the Indians back to
with one, and the second period ended with Brampton
leading 4-3, but facing the first St Regis power-play
to start the 3rd.
Neither team allowed a power-play goal
all night. After a great penalty kill, Mike Hominuck
scored 6 minutes into the 3rd, to restore the 2 goal
lead. With Patrick Merrill in the box, the team went
on to kill another penalty, and then rookie Brendan
Doran scored his first goal in the Majors on a breakaway
to increase the lead to three. With time running out,
St. Regis began to pull their goaltender for the extra
attacker. Their first attempt was successful as Kevin
Dostie blasted one in with just under two minutes remaining,
but the Excelsior defense and goaltender Anthony Cosmo
held strong, and the buzzer sounded with a final score
of Brampton 6 St. Regis 4.
The Excelsior's hope to be close to
full strength for their next contest this Thursday night
in Brampton, when they face the visiting KW Kodiaks
at 8:00 in the Powerade Centre. Once again, season tickets
will be available, now at $90 per pair. That gets you
2 tickets to the remaining 8 home games, a $144 value.
Tickets are for sale through many different levels of
the Excelsior organization or arrangements can be made
through e-mail at be-lax@hotmail.com.
