Excelsior's
open strong against Chiefs
After hosting and winning the Mann
cup in 2008 during the 125th anniversary of the
club, there were some that questioned "where
do we go from here?" The simple answer is;
try and do it again, but in the West. The 2009 season
kicked off last night against the Six Nations Chiefs.
Brampton opened up the scoring early
(20 seconds in) as the combination of Sanderson,
Doyle, and Teat got back in the groove with Teat
finishing it off. Six Nations would score their
first of the night 3 minutes later. Throughout the
first period both teams were trying to rekindle
the chemistry's of seasons past and the game had
a great flow with very few stoppages. Brampton would
eventually get the lead back on a power-play marker
from Dan Dawson with less than 5 minutes to go to
end the period 2-1 Brampton.
Josh Sanderson got his first of
the year early into the second period and call-up
Bryan Johnson then tallied his first Major Series
goal to extend the Brampton lead. Six Nations answered
those goals quickly with one of their own, but Brampton
would continue to apply the strong defensive pressure
that they are known for and kept them off the score
sheet for the remainder of the period. Meanwhile
Brampton would add another goal from Captain Teat
and one each from Brodie Merrill and Sean Holmes
to send the teams to the break with Brampton ahead
7 - 2.
That trend continued into the final
frame. John McClure would score a power-play goal
3 minutes in, and Mike Hominuck would score his
first at the halfway point. Six Nations managed
to get back on the offensive side of things with
6 minutes to go while on a power-play, but Brampton's
Sandy Chapman scored a breakaway goal on the next
possession to seal the game for the home team.
The Excelsiors travel to Six Nations
on Saturday to complete the home and home series
and hope to maintain the current momentum. They
return to the Powerade Centre on Thursday night
to host the Barrie Lakeshores at 8:00. Come check
out all the action as well as the new Excelsiors
Dance Team…
