Brampton
Reigns Supreme
By Brian R. Johnston
Brampton, ON -
The City of Brampton can take tremendous
pride in their Brampton Excelsior's, as they won
the final and deciding game in the Major Series
Lacrosse Championship for 2008 by a score of 7 -
2 over the Peterborough Lakers last night at the
Powerade Centre in Brampton.
They had managed to force a game
7 after defeating the Lakers on Tuesday night in
Peterborough and will now host the Mann Cup in our
fair city.
The deciding game started by putting
lumps in the throats of the overwhelming crowd of
Brampton faithful on hand as they trailed 1 - 0
after only :27 seconds before responding with 2
goals of their own by Josh Sanderson and Blaine
Manning before the first period had come to a close.
After the early jitters settled,
they managed to out shoot the Lakers 21 - 12 and
controlled both the pace and play because of the
confidence and disciplined actions taken on the
floor.
They held a 21 - 13 margin in shots
on goal in the second period but gave up the tying
goal to Nick Carson of the Lakers on one of the
few miscues exhibited in the entire game. Josh Sanderson
and Aaron Wilson both scored in the period to restore
the lead and open up a 2 goal lead that they took
into the 2nd intermission.
The third period saw the Excelsior's
control the action once again, but they were playing
a different type of game for the first 13 minutes
of the period, which was awesome defensively with
a very ball-controlled mindset offensively, however,
they struck at the 13:41 mark to open up a 3 goal
lead and all but ensured the victory by forcing
the Lakers into pulling their goalie Pat O'Toole
who had been spectacular throughout in the Lakers
net.
Jon Harasym and Jeff Shattler both
scored into an empty net to close out the scoring
for the Championship and helped send the hometown
Excelsior's into the Mann Cup Championships.
Mann Cup details to follow soon.
