Excelsiors Offensive Struggles
at Home Continue
Saturday night at the Powerade Centre
saw Brampton play host to the struggling Six Nations
Chiefs. The Chiefs entered the game in last place
but coming off a win on Thursday night, whilst the
first place Excelsiors dropped their second game
to Kitchener. This would be the final time that
the two teams would meet in the regular season with
Brampton having won both of the previous encounters.
Brampton fans were excited to see
the return of Josh Sanderson to the line-up who
had been out after only playing 5 minutes into the
first game of the season. The hope was that he would
add a spark to an offense that has been struggling
as of late.
Unfortunately, once again the Brampton
squad was unable to score a single point in the
first frame. Six Nations opened up the scoring 8
minutes into the game and were able to add another
with 1 minute left to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The first period was played very tight by both teams
and the refs kept their whistles in their pockets.
Aaron Wilson put the Excelsiors
on the board 2 minutes into the second period, but
Six Nations responded with 4 straight goals to take
their lead up to 5. Wilson would score another with
12 minutes to go, and Blaine Manning broke free
to pot his first of the game with the team short-handed
to bring the Excelsiors back to within three. Six
Nations did capitalize during that same penalty,
but Jeff Shattler would score minutes later to end
the period 7-4 for the visitors.
Manning would add his second of
the night 5 minutes into the third, but once again
Six Nations answered almost immediately. Josh Sanderson
scored his first of the season which appeared to
bring new life to the Brampton bench, but unfortunately
that didn't translate on the score sheet. Six Nations
would add 2 more goals while Brampton was only able
to muster up one from Dan Dawson in the final minutes
of the game. Final score Six Nations 10 Brampton
7.
With St. Regis winning both of their
games this weekend, the Brampton Excelsiors find
themselves now tied for first place. Meanwhile Six
Nations has now moved out of the basement with another
win on Sunday, and appear to be on a roll.
Brampton hosts Brooklin in their
only meeting at the Powerade Centre this year on
Thursday night at 8:00. If the Excelsiors want to
position themselves for the long playoff run to
the Mann the offense had better start playing with
more consistency, especially at home.
