Excelsiors come back too late

After climbing back into second place, the Excelsiors would be challenged once again in their final regular season match against the St. Regis Indians. With the series tied at one game a piece, Saturday nights contest could prove to be very important in determining the playoff rankings at the end of the season with no clear dominant team having pulled away at this point.

Brampton opened up the scoring early as Dan Dawson found rookie Jordon Coffey cutting through the middle. Unfortunately that was all Brampton would be able to produce in the opening frame. The defense held on strong for a while, but at the mid-point of the period, St. Regis would finally break through to tie the game up and went on a four goal run in the last 6 minutes to give them a 5 - 1 edge at the break.

St. Regis continued to apply the pressure and scored the first 3 goals of the second period to increase their lead to 7. Aaron Wilson would finally break the Indians momentum with just over 5 minutes to go. Dan Dawson put another one past the St. Regis keeper 3 minutes later. Josh Sanderson would get an assist on this goal giving him 1200 career points in the MSL and over 1100 of those came for Brampton. Dan Teat would add a powerplay marker in the final minute of the period to bring Brampton back to within 4.

It was over 8 minutes into the final period before Dan Teat was able to bring the home team closer but St. Regis was able to respond less than a minute later to re-establish their 4 goal cushion. Brampton continued to apply pressure though. With 4 and a half minutes to go Blaine Manning scored his first of the season and Josh Sanderson would add another on the very next shift to give the fans renewed hope. Despite the increased effort Brampton was not able to add any more. In the final minute St. Regis fired the ball down the floor where it took a funny bounce off the side boards and rolled into the net to end the game 10-7.

Brampton now faces a tough stretch on the road traveling to Brooklin on Wednesday night and then meeting Peterborough for the first time in Peterborough on Thursday night. They end the week with the final game against Barrie in Barrie on Sunday.
