Stellar Performance
By Excelsior's
In Season Finale
By Brian R. Johnston
Brampton, ON -
The Brampton Excelsior's put on
a genuine clinic in their season finale against
the Barrie Lakeshores at the Powerade Centre in
Brampton tonight and the stellar performance saw
them dominate as they won at will by a 15 - 6 margin.
One would think that by having Paul
Dawson, Dan Dawson, Jon Harasym, Blaine Manning,
Brodie Merrill, Phil and Josh Sanderson all MIA,
that they would have been hard pressed in what was
a crucial game for the Lakeshores as they were striving
to secure the last playoff spot available, but that
turned out to not be the case as the rest of the
team all showed up in the victory.
The game was virtually over at the
end of the first period as Brampton went to the
intermission with a 6 - 2 lead, having out shot
the Lakeshores 22 - 12 before returning to really
put the final nails in the coffin for Barrie in
period 2 as they stretched their lead to 14 - 4.
In what was probably the biggest
offensive out put by Jeff Shattler of the year,
as he tallied 6 goals to lead the Excelsior's to
victory, it was the only contribution he made in
this one, as he dominated throughout with tremendous
ball control and as leader that he could be by answering
any situation positively.
Ryan Campbell wasn't silent on the
offensive front either, as he scored a natural hat
trick and added an assist and Colin Doyle (1G, 5A),
John McClure (1 G, 3A), Dan Teat ( 1G, 4A), Mike
Hominuck (1G, 4A), Bruce Codd (2A), Sandy Chapman
(1G, 1A), Patrick Merrill (1G) and Brandon Miller
(1A) all chipped in to secure the win.
Head Coach Troy Cordingley had to
be impressed with the effort displayed in this one
as well, as it certainly sets the stage for what
is to be an exciting foray into the playoffs and
march towards claiming the Mann Cup.
Congratulations to the Excelsior's
on their league championship and the best of luck
in their drive toward the Mann Cup.
Brampton
Playoff Bound
Having finished the season in 1st
place the Brampton Major Excelsiors automatically
go through to the semi-finals. They will await the
outcome of the 2 first round series that will get
underway next week and will play the lowest seeded
team that will advance. With how tight and competitive
the league has become, who that will be is anyone's
guess. The Semi-final's will get underway at the
Powerade Centre on July 31st. Continue to check
the Brampton Guardian and the website for more details.
The Brampton Junior A's meanwhile
are already in the playoffs and need your support
as they are battling the number 1 ranked team in
the country. Orangeville has jumped out to a 2 game
lead in their series, but you can never count out
the Excelsior's. Game 3 of the series is in Orangeville
on Friday night and then returns to Brampton's Memorial
arena for what should be a real barn-burner on Saturday
at 7:00.
Poker
Night
The Brampton Major Excelsior's first
annual Texas Hold em' poker tournament is scheduled
for Saturday July 26th at the Real Star's Café in
the Powerade Centre. Get all the info on the website,
or e-mail Tomm Brannon at be-lax@hotmail.com. Looking
to have another fun night before the playoffs get
underway…
