Kevin
Ross helps gain series edge for Excelsior's
Despite playing
3 games in past 5 nights the Excelsiors found themselves
on the road again Tuesday night to play the final
regular season game against the Six Nations Chiefs.
The two teams had both played strong to open their
seasons at home and split the ever important series
match up. This year Six Nations was the host of
the extra and therefore deciding game.
The home team would
get on the board early as Bomberry beat Cosmo less
than two minutes into the game. The teams would
battle throughout the remainder of the period with
Brampton killing off one powerplay and Six Nations
responding by killing off almost 4 minutes themselves.
With less than a minute to go Brodie Merrill would
grab a loose ball and made no mistake in finding
the back of the net to send the teams to the break
tied at 1.
John McClure would
get Brampton their first lead of the night on the
first possession of the second period. The Chiefs
would respond though, scoring the next 3 goals before
John would answer again with his second of the night.
Six Nations would get the lone powerplay goal of
the game shortly thereafter to re-establish their
lead. Brampton's recent addition Kevin Ross would
get his first of the night on the very next Excelsior
possession, and then found the twine again with
less than 30 seconds to go to restore the tie before
the break.
Six Nations continued
to come on strong, scoring on their first possession
of the 3rd period and then again less than 2 minutes
later to gain a 2 goal advantage. Colin Doyle, who
assisted on both of the Ross goals, would get one
of his own a minute later, and then Ross would tie
the game once again on a nice feed from Aaron Wilson.
Doyle would find Kevin two more times after the
midway point of the period giving Ross the natural
hat-trick and the Excelsiors a two goal lead with
just over 4 minutes to go. Doyle would add to that
cushion 30 seconds later earning himself a 6 point
night. Six Nations would come back with goals at
both the 18 and 19 minute mark, but the Brampton
defense held strong to end the game 10 - 9 in favour
of the Excelsiors.
Brampton's schedule
continues to press on as they return home on Thursday
to try and get redemption from the Barrie Lakeshores.
Just last week Brampton was shocked as the team
that they handled with relative ease last season
came out and embarrassed them at home. Brampton
will be ready for them this time.
