Williams outscores
Redmen
In the long standing
rivalry between Brampton and Brooklin this would
be the first time Shawn Williams would enter the
Powerade Centre as an Excelsior. With the standings
getting even murkier thanks to Brooklin defeating
Six Nations on Wednesday night, Brampton is now
in complete control of their own destiny and every
game matters.
Less than 3 minutes
into the game, Kevin Ross would open the scoring
for the home side. Dan Teat and Shawn Williams would
score their respective first goals of the night
14 seconds apart just after the five minute mark,
but Brooklin would be quick to respond with a pair
of their own just one minute later. Shawn Williams
would capitalize on Brampton's first power-play
of the evening late in the period to give the Excelsiors
a 4-2 lead after 20 minutes.
Blaine Manning
would extend the Brampton lead early in the second,
but once again, the Redmen were quick to respond.
Midway through the period Brooklin would then draw
within one as the two teams continued to battle
up and down the floor. Although the goal was credited
to Williams, the Excelsior faithful would never
mistake the cross-crease play of Sanderson to Teat
that gave the Excelsiors a 6-4 lead after two periods
of action.
On Brampton's first
power-play of the third period Josh would find Aaron
Wilson on the right side, and then Aaron Wilson
set up Kevin Ross on the next power-play to give
Brampton a four goal edge. This seemed to open the
floodgates. Brampton would end the contest with
7 more goals (Manning 1, Sanderson, Doyle, and Williams
2 each) for a 15-4 final. Shawn Williams would exit
the game with 5 goals and 3 assists while his former
team was only able to manage 4 goals and 3 assists
in total.
As mentioned at
the opening, the MSL standings have grown more interesting.
Sunday night's game against Peterborough could very
well be one of the most important games of the year
for the Excelsiors. With a win on Sunday, Brampton
will take sole possession of 1st place and can then
seal it with a win on Thursday, but Peterborough
is on a tear as of late and are going to come in
looking for that coveted spot just as desperately
as the Excelsiors. The game should bring the playoff
atmosphere to the Powerade Centre a little earlier
than usual and should be a great treat for the fans.
Game time is 7:00 after the Junior A's wrap up their
regular season at 3:00 against Barrie.
