Excelsior's
split weekend
The Brampton Excelsiors
boarded a bus early on Saturday morning knowing
that they were on their way to face an undefeated
St. Regis team and needed to start putting the pieces
together before they put themselves in an even deeper
hole.
The first 10 minutes
of the game saw the scoring go back and forth between
the two teams, but with the score tied at 3 a piece,
Brampton would rattle of the next 4 to take a 7-3
lead into the break. St. Regis would get one back
early into the second and pull to within 2 halfway
through, but Brampton would once again respond with
another run of 3 to increase their lead to 10-5.
Brampton would score first in the 3rd period before
St. Regis was able to find the score sheet once
again. St. Regis managed to score twice in the period,
but Brampton would respond with 2 markers of their
own, to complete a 13-7 victory. Brampton was able
to spread out the offense very effectively with
11 different players finding the game sheet led
by Josh Sanderson's 3 goal 5 assist performance.
The team returned
to the arena on Sunday with the hopes of capitalizing
on their returned momentum. Once again the two teams
would trade goals throughout the 1st period, but
it was St. Regis that managed to break a 3-3 tie
with one minute to go and then broke up Brampton's
final play of the period and found the empty net
to increase their lead to 5-3. St. Regis appeared
to have all the momentum in the second period, scoring
on a delayed penalty, shorthanded, and then on a
transition breakaway to gain an 8-3 edge with the
game at the midway point. It had been a very chippy
affair and Paul Dawson decided that it was time
to change things up and squared off against Dave
Campbell. After the tilt the Brampton bench would
respond with 2 goals of their own to end the period
8-5 for St. Regis. Brampton would continue to hold
the momentum and scored twice more in the opening
4 minutes to pull the game to within a goal. St.
Regis responded though with 13 minutes remaining
and seemed to put it away with another with under
5 minutes to go. Brampton refused to give up. With
the goalie pulled Mike Hominuck would score with
3 and a half minutes to go, Josh Sanderson would
perform the same on the very next possession, and
Colin Doyle would complete the comeback 30 seconds
later to tie the game at 10 with just over 2 minutes
to go. Neither team was able to score and prevent
the extra frame. St. Regis was able to score just
12 seconds into the overtime period off the draw
and added 2 more in the opening 4 minutes. There
would be no comeback this time, and after adding
an empty netter, St. Regis would send Brampton home
with a 14-10 overtime loss. Brampton would once
again have 10 players netting points but were led
by Colin Doyle's 3 goal, 4 assist performance.
Brampton has no
time to breathe as they travel to Six Nations for
the rubber match on Tuesday and return home to host
Barrie once again on Thursday June 11th.
