Excelsiors Roll Over Lakeshores
The Brampton Excelsiors traveled
to Barrie on Sunday night to face the Lakeshores
in their new home, the Holley Community Centre.
Barrie defeated Brampton in all three regular season
games last year before Brampton kicked into high
gear for the playoffs and eliminated Barrie in a
four game sweep in the semi-finals.
After their great game Saturday
night at home against the rival Peterborough Lakers
(see previous story) matched with a Kitchener loss
to St. Regis, the Excelsiors found themselves back
on top of the standings and want to remain there
for the rest of the season. No game can be taken
lightly if the team wants to earn a first round
bye in this years playoffs.
Thirty seconds into the game Captain
Dan Teat found the back of the net from a Colin
Doyle feed. Five minutes later Teat beat Atwood
again, this time in a pretty play from Dan Dawson.
Patrick Merrill fired one into the top shelf on
a breakaway, and Aaron Wilson added his first of
the night to give Brampton a 4-0 first period.
Thirty seconds into the second period
saw Brandon Miller pass the long ball down to Jon
Harasym who made no mistake in finishing it off.
Dan Teat scored his hat-trick goal five minutes
later but that ended his night as he was called
for illegal equipment (a chain). The Excelsiors
would not hold back though. Wilson scored his second
of the night and Jeff Shattler added a powerplay
marker to give Brampton an 8-0 lead halfway through
the game. Barrie finally got on the scoreboard with
six minutes left in the second period when former
Excelsior Aimee Caines beat Brandon Miller, and
they added a second off of a deflected pass to end
the second period 8-2.
This Brampton team was not going
to walk through the final frame though. Aaron Wilson
completed his hat trick a minute and a half into
the third. Jeff Shattler added a shorthanded goal
five minutes later, and Dan Dawson scored his only
goal of the night (to go with his 5 assists) with
a blast from the top on an Excelsior powerplay.
Barrie scored once more while the teams were 4 on
4 with three minutes to go in the game, leaving
the final score Brampton 11 Barrie 3.
The Excelsiors travel to Peterborough
on Thursday night before getting a well deserved
weekend off. They then travel to Brooklin on Wednesday
June 18th before returning home for the rematch
against Kitchener on Thursday June 19th where they
hope to avenge their first performance.
