Excelsiors complete
sweep
The Excelsiors
traveled to Kitchener on Tuesday night to finish
off their regular season match-ups against the Kodiaks.
All three games were played within 5 nights and
although Brampton had won the first two in commanding
fashion they are taking every game seriously in
what is turning out to be a very close race in the
MSL standings.
Kevin Ross would
open the scoring for Brampton just over five minutes
into the game. The Kodiaks would answer with a low
bouncer before the period was halfway through, but
Shawn Williams would capitalize on the first power-play
of the night to regain the lead for the Excelsiors.
Kitchener was able to get a power-play marker of
their own a few minutes later but in the dying seconds
of the period Williams would blast through his second
of the night to end the period 3-2 Brampton.
Kevin Ross would
net his second of the night on a feed from Shawn
Williams that would mark Shawn's 800th career assist,
but the Excelsiors and that duo were not done yet.
Ross would score again 2 minutes later, and then
while Ross was in the penalty box Mike Kirk intercepted
a pass and found Drew Petkoff on the two on one
to score a short-handed goal. Kevin would score
his 4th of the night with 4 minutes remaining driving
down the middle. Williams would find Josh Sanderson
on the power-play shortly thereafter before finishing
off his hat-trick to end the 6-0 second period giving
Brampton a 9-2 going into the final period.
Kitchener would
end a 25 minute scoring drought early on, but Brampton
would answer with goals from Blaine Manning and
Paul Dawson to increase the lead further. The game
got a little scrappy at this point with two different
fights breaking out. Dawson took on Tinning and
shortly thereafter Petkoff squared off against Pinder
with neither fight being clearly decided. Kitchener
would go on a 3 goal run to cut into the Brampton
lead, but the Excelsiors would not collapse that
easily. The teams then traded goals inside the final
5 minutes (McClure for Brampton) to end the game
12-7 Excelsiors.
Brampton now sits
in a tie atop the MSL standings but have only three
games remaining. If they are to get a first round
bye they will have to continue to play this strong
as they face Brooklin on Thursday night at home
and then the Peterborough Lakers twice (July 12th,
and 16th at the Powerade Centre) to end the regular
season.
