Excelsiors
Off to Montreal
The Brampton Excelsiors
go on the road this weekend, and hopefully can use
the experience to rekindle the team spirit that
led them to the pinnacle of the lacrosse world last
year after an ugly loss to the formerly winless
Barrie Lakeshores Thursday night.
Newcomer Kevin
Ross opened the scoring early for the hometown Excelsiors
but Barrie was quick to counter. Brampton would
then go on to rattle off the next three markers
as Dan Teat would score shorthanded and Josh Sanderson
would add two in a row. That was enough to chase
Derrick Gordon out of the net as Mike Atwood would
step in for the Lakeshores. Whether or not it was
because of the change, Barrie would find new life.
In his first MSL appearance the number one draft
pick Stephen Keough would score the next three goals
to even up the game. Barrie would go on to score
three more, including one from their keeper Atwood
in the final second to take a 7-4 lead.
Keough would score
again on his first shift of the second period. Brampton's
Dan Dawson would put the Excelsior's back in the
right direction scoring his first of the night 90
seconds later. Aaron Wilson would bring the home
team back to within 2 but Keough would once again
respond to restore the Barrie lead at the mid point
of the game. Barrie would add two more near the
end of the period, but Mike Hominuck would blast
one in with the extra attacker on the final possession
to give the fans some hope. Tempers flared as the
teams began making their way to the dressing rooms
resulting in players from both teams and coach Cordingley
being ejected from the game.
Josh Sanderson
would snag his third of the night inside the opening
minute of the final period. Dan Dawson would score
his second a couple of minutes later to bring the
Excelsior's back to within 2. Unfortunately that
was all the scoring the home team could manage on
this night. Barrie would add a 4 on 4 goal halfway
through the period, and were able to keep Brampton
at bay until the final buzzer. Final score Barrie
12 Brampton 9.
As mentioned, Brampton
plays undefeated St. Regis this weekend, but due
to issues at the border crossing the games have
been moved to Kahnawake Sports Complex just South
of Montreal. Brampton needs to come together as
a team if they hope to come away victorious this
weekend and get back to the winning ways in which
Brampton fans have become accustomed to. They then
travel to Six Nations once again on Tuesday before
returning home to host Barrie once again on Thursday
June 11th.
