Brampton won the
first of three games against Kitchener on Thursday
night at the Powerade Centre and had to travel to
Waterloo on Sunday night to continue the series.
Last year Kitchener was the one team that gave the
Excelsior's problems during the regular season,
so with the playoff race heating up late in the
year Brampton went in knowing what had to be done.
Aaron Wilson would
open the scoring for the Excelsiors less than 4
minutes into the game. Josh Sanderson would tally
his first of the night less than two minutes later
on a nice pick and roll play with Shawn Williams.
Mike Hominuck would score the next two for Brampton
at the 6 and 11 minute marks respectively before
Josh would add his second of the evening with just
over seven minutes remaining. The Kodiaks decided
it was time to change goalies at this point, but
Dan Teat wasted no time and continued to add to
the Excelsior lead just 15 seconds later. The first
period would conclude with Brampton holding a commanding
6-0 lead.
Kitchener would
get on the scoresheet with 4 seconds left on their
second power-play of the game, but Brampton's captain
Dan Teat would respond by scoring two nice goals
of his own inside of a minute after the KW marker.
Two minutes later the Kodiaks would score on an
individual effort while the Excelsiors had a 4 on
3 advantage, but Blaine Manning would respond with
one of his own on a subsequent 4 on 4 situation
and Josh would complete his hat-trick a couple of
minutes later. Kitchener would score the next two
during the final five minutes of the period, but
Brampton's John McClure would win the next face-off
and received the ball back after a couple of nifty
passes to send the teams to the break with the Excelsiors
up 11-4.
Josh wasn't done
yet. Less than 5 minutes into the final frame Colin
Doyle found him cutting through the middle to give
him four for the night, and after Kitchener managed
to get that one back, Josh picked up a rebound on
the crease and buried his fifth. Mike Hominuck would
complete his second consecutive hat-trick before
the period was halfway through and Shawn Williams
would keep his scoring streak going as well with
what would be the final goal of the game with eight
minutes remaining to give a final result of Brampton
15 Kitchener-Waterloo 5.
Brampton hopes
for a similar result when the two teams do it all
again on Tuesday night in Kitchener which marks
the end of the away games for the Excelsiors. Brampton
then faces Brooklin at home on Thursday night before
hosting Peterborough for the final two games of
the season on Sunday July 12th and Thursday July
16th in games which will likely have major playoff
ramifications for both teams and set a tone for
what should be a thrilling "second season".
