Redmen Rebound Not Enough

Thursday's 13-1 semi-final opener between the Brampton Excelsior's and the Brooklin Redmen had a lot of fans questioning what would happen when the two teams met again for round two in the Powerade Centre on Monday night. Could Brampton's top rated defense continue to frustrate the young Brooklin squad, or would Brooklin use the experience to find a new plan of attack?

Just over a minute into the game, with the teams playing 4 on 4 Josh Sanderson deflected a pass from Colin Doyle to put the Excelsiors on the board. The next goal didn't come until the teams were 4 on 4 once again, but this time it was Brooklin's Derek Hopcroft finding the back of the net to tie the game. Josh Sanderson would score the next 2 (the first on the power-play) to give the Excelsior's a 3-1 margin at the end of the 1st.

Brodie Merrill opened up the scoring for the home team 2 minutes into the second period, but then Brooklin rebounded and went on a 3 goal run to bring the game back to even. The Excelsiors were going to have to regroup and try to regain the focus that they so clearly demonstrated in the first game if they were going to hold off the surging Redmen. Aaron Wilson scored his first of the night at the halfway mark of the frame, and that was followed up with a marker from Blaine Manning 2 minutes later. Mike Carnegie then scored his second in as many games on a power-play to regain the Excelsiors 3 goal margin, but Brooklin would respond with 2 minutes to go to end the period 7-5 Brampton.

The third period was a chippy affair. The game had had its share of confrontations and it looked as though things were only going to get rougher. After a lot of back and forth play with some great stops from net-minder Brandon Miller, Dan Teat was left all alone out front and buried a short-handed marker with 8 minutes left. Aaron Wilson then added his second of the night a minute later. Brooklin's Steve Hutchins then took it upon himself to start using his stick in more creative ways which was not taken too kindly by the Brampton bench. On the ensuing 3 on 3 Blaine Manning would add another marker to help secure the win, and after the penalties were over Paul Dawson showed Mr. Hutchins the price to be paid for his ways and both combatants left the game with a minute to go. Brooklin would score once more in the final minute, but the win was secure; Brampton 10 Brooklin 6.

Game 3 and 4 move to Brooklin this coming Wednesday and Friday. Please note the 8:30 start times as the Lacrosse Festival is underway at the IPSC. Game 5 if needed will be back at the Powerade Centre on Monday night with an 8:00 start time.
