At the CLA's Board of Directors Semi-Annual General Meeting in Saskatoon on May 29th, 2010, CLA President, Joey Harris, presented John Herd with the Lester B. Pearson Award.
John has been involved in Lacrosse for over 40 years and over this time has made countless contributions to the game at the local, provincial and national level, particularly in the area of officiating including:

  • Authority on the Box Lacrosse Rule Book
  • Longest serving member of the CLA Officials Committee
  • Initiating Standby Referees for National Championships
  • Co-authored the first Instructors' Manual for teaching referees
  • Master Referee Course Conductor

The Lester B. Pearson Award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions of sportsmanship and leadership in the game of Lacrosse and to the physical and mental development of young Canadians through unselfish dedication as a volunteer. The Brampton Excelsiors would like to congratulate John on this achievement and for the time and dedication he has contributed to our National Game. Well Done John!

Joseph Coffey

Passed away suddenly on April 23, 2010. Beloved husband and best friend of Marie for 29 years and dedicated father to Jackson and Jordan. Son of Catherine and the late John Coffey. Brother of Michael (Debbie), Pat (Julie), David (Lisa), Bernie, Anne Marie (Joe), Maureen (Steve) and predeceased by his brother Paul. Much loved son-in-law to James and Margaret Burke. Brother-in-law to Sandra (Tom), Paul (Julie) and James (Jackie). Loving uncle to 21 nieces and nephews. Joe was avid lover of music and sports. Joe dedicated his time to Brampton Minor sports including hockey and lacrosse; he was also a well liked referee (by most players and coaches). Joe was known for his quick wit, sense of humour and his kindness. Joe will be missed by his relatives and many friends. Joe was a loving father and a great friend to many people. Family and Friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home “Brampton Chapel”, 52 Main Street South (Hwy 10), Brampton on Monday, April 26th from 6-9 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 27th at St. Marguerite D’Youville, 2490 Sandalwood Pkwy East, Brampton at 9am. Cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Princess Margaret Foundation would be appreciated.

Our prayers and condolences go out to Jordan and the entire Coffey family - BELC Executive

JIM MOSS BONSPIEL FUNDRAISER, March 27th

Councillor John Sanderson, Ziggy Musial, Dean McLeod, Jim Moss, Wendy Bennett-Costante, Reg Ewles and Tony Bennett.

Background: Jim Moss played his entire minor Lacrosse and Hockey in Brampton. As a member of the 1992 Brampton Capitals, they won the Jr A Tier ll Ontario Championship. Playing Lacrosse with the Jr A Excelsiors, they were Minto Cup finalist in 1994, and in 2002 with the Major Excelsiors Mann Cup winners. Jim is also a member of Brampton’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Jim was stricken with Gillian Barre Syndrome in September 2009. This left Jim with paralysis of his legs and loss of sensation in his hands and feet. Jim is now convalescing at home and is expected to get 90-100% recovery over the next 1-2 years. Jim is married with two young children; his daughter Olivia being born two months after the onset of his illness. With Jim's wife Jennifer on reduced income from maternity leave, Jim on reduced income with long term disability, the loss of his professional Lacrosse playing salary and combined medical bills tallying $75-$100,000.00 it was decided to hold the Jim Moss Bonspiel Fundraiser. Players and teams from the OHL, NHL and NLL generously donated items for auction.

Being forced to now retire from professional sports, Jim’s goal is to further his education and become a life coach. In this capacity he will help those whose circumstances leave them in need of help to change the direction of their lives. He also plans to publicly speak in schools, work with youth and empower them with tools to set and achieve life goals. Jim and family, although presently living in San Jose, California, have plans to return to Ontario when his illness allows and work becomes available.
