Offense sparked
with new addition
After a disappointing
showing in Peterborough on Thursday night, the Brampton
Excelsiors found themselves in 4th place in the
standings, but with the race so tightly contended
there is still a chance to regain one of the coveted
top two spots. On Saturday morning coach Cordingley
pulled the trigger on a major trade that sees long
time Brooklin Captain and all-time scoring leader
Shawn Williams join the Brampton squad and his impact
was seen immediately.
On the first possession
in Barrie Sunday night Kevin Ross took a pass right
in front and scored. Shawn Williams was credited
with an assist. Brampton was called for too many
men shortly thereafter, but after killing off over
a minute of the penalty, Mike Hominuck would break
free and bury one of his own to increase the lead.
The rest of the period seemed to be almost entirely
in the Barrie end, but despite excellent passing
and ball control, Brampton was unable to capitalize
due to a stellar effort from the Barrie netminder.
Brampton would kill off another penalty, but the
period ended 2-0.
It took over four
minutes into the third before Barrie would score
on a breakaway power-play goal. Brampton finally
broke the scoring drought at the nine minute mark
as Josh Sanderson found Mike Hominuck alone out
front, and that seemed to open the floodgates. The
Excelsior's would then go on to score 5 more in
quick succession with markers from Doyle, Johnson,
Teat, and two from Sanderson which led to Barrie
changing goalies. With less than a minute to go
in the period Josh Sanderson would net his third
of the game to finish the period 9-1.
Barrie would be
the first to score in the third, but it didn't seem
to faze the Brampton squad. On Brampton's first
power-play of the evening Colin Doyle found himself
free in front of the net after what seemed like
15 passes and after three fakes of his own he finished
it off in style. Less than a minute later Paul Dawson
took exception to a check from behind on teammate
Patrick Merrill resulting in a heavyweight tilt
that left both combatants bloodied but with Paul
walking away the victor. Shawn Williams would score
his first in an Excelsior uniform on the ensuing
power-play to end the night with 1 goal and 4 assists.
Brampton would add two more in the final minutes
to secure the 13-2 win.
Brampton now plays
all three Kitchener games in succession starting
at home on Thursday July 2nd at the Powerade Centre
before finishing their away schedule in Kitchener
on Sunday July 5th and Tuesday July 7th. With Peterborough
losing in Six Nations last night the standings continue
to remain very close with only 4 points separating
1st and 5th place and Brampton being right in the
middle. Every game counts, so be sure you don't
miss any of the action.
